About Porthpean
Porthpean camps
are action packed holidays, full of an exciting mix of challenging outdoor
activities, Christian teaching and worship, meeting old friends and making new
ones.
Which camp?
. . .
Porthpean 1 is for ages 9-13 and Porthpean 2 is for ages 12-15. Both have
teaching and activity programmes that are specifically designed for the age of
members and allow extra challenges for older members.
Members
. . . are the important people at Porthpean camps! Everything is planned to give
you the best holiday possible! There are two camps each with activities and
teaching specifically planned for the age group involved. Each camp has 96
members at Porthpean and more than 300 people involved altogether over the two
camps.
During the day
. . . there are a wide range of outdoor activities taking full advantage of the
coast, rivers, lakes and moorland of Cornwall. Activity programmes are
finalized before each camp and change from year to year. Activities are likely to include climbing and
abseiling, canoeing, sailing, snorkelling, coasteering and high ropes.
Christian teaching and worship
. . . is a really important part of each camp and greatly enjoyed by everyone.
The programme includes worship meetings each evening, quiet times, workshops,
seminars and discipleship. Everyone gets involved in a worship workshop that
prepares drama, art, music, video and computer presentations for the evening
meetings in Porthpean barn.
Leaders at camp
. . . number more than 70 in each week! All volunteers and all Christians, most of whom
work with young people in their local churches. The camps are organized into
villages - small groups that stay together for all activities.
Porthpean site
. . . is spectacular — with wonderful cliff top views. The camps are held at
Porthpean Outdoor Education Centre, just outside St Austell, Cornwall.
Accommodation is in tents with floorboards and mattresses. The site is well
equipped with a permanent kitchen and dining room and modern shower and toilet
blocks.
Food
. . . is a real highlight at Porthpean. There’s a special team of volunteer
cooks making sure there are always great things to eat for everyone – including
catering for special diets.
Getting there
. . . is very easy if you join one of the supervised groups of leaders and young
people travelling from different parts of the country: usually London, Reading,
Derby, Birmingham and Bristol. Group travel is at additional cost.
Keeping everyone safe
. . . is given the highest priority. For activities we use qualified instructors
employed by Cornwall Outdoor Education service who work with school groups
throughout the year. In addition to instructors, our own leader ratios are never
more than two members to one adult. All leaders are Criminal Record Bureau
checked and provide two references. Two leaders sleep in each tent with the
members. As many of the activities are water-based, we recommend that members
should be able to swim at least 50 metres.
