Travel to and from Porthpean

It is very important that we know how members will travel to and from camp. We organise group travel by train with parties of young people and leaders starting from and returning to Paddington, Reading, Derby, Birmingham and Bristol Temple Meads. Transfers from and to St Austell station will be by coach and/or minibus.

We hope that as many young people as possible will use the group travel option. Group travel is:

  • better for young people - they get a longer holiday with more time with friends and with leaders;

  • better for parents - who can avoid a long journey to Cornwall on two successive weeks;

  • better for us - as we prepare the Porthpean site for as many as possible to arrive in train parties.

In order to secure suitable reservations for each party at the lowest possible fares, we need to know your firm travel plans now. This enables us to take advantage of advance bookings and railcard reductions. Details cannot be confirmed yet as timetables are not available, but we hope to organise departures at the following times on Saturday 26 July (Porthpean 1) and Sunday 3 August (Porthpean 2):

  • from Paddington at about 1:00 pm and from Reading at about 1:30 pm

  • from Derby at about 12:30 pm, Birmingham at about 1:15 pm and Bristol at about 2:30 pm.

We hope to organise return trains on Saturday 2 August (Porthpean 1) and Sunday 10 August (Porthpean 2) to arrive:

  • in Reading at about 2:00 pm and Paddington at about 2:30 pm.

  • in Bristol at about 1:00 pm, Birmingham at about 3:00 pm and Derby at about 4:00 pm.

Full details of train times will be confirmed when the summer timetables are published.

We expect to be able to arrange travel for £40 per head from Paddington and Reading, £35 per head from Bristol and £50 per head from Derby and Birmingham. Any savings will be passed on. Because of the way in which we purchase tickets and railcards, we expect to have to charge the full return fare even if you will only be travelling with the group in one direction.
